Canada targets 1.3 million immigrants by 2020

Canada’s government released an immigration level plan for next year,  the plan aims to add more than 431,000 permanent residents this year, 447,000 in the following year 2023, and 451,000 in 2024. According to reports 2021, around 56% of new immigrants will come under economic class pathways such as Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program, and the Temporary to Permanent Residence (TR2PR) stream.

A nation of immigrants

Nearly 75% “believe the hard work and talent of immigrants make Canada better”, and nearly 65% “believe immigrants should only be allowed in Canada if they adopt Canadian values”, the research conducted on 1,000 adults through an online poll by Research Co.

According to Mario Canseco, president of Research Co. and the author of the report, the poll conducted last week showed that some political and regional disparities persist across the country.

“Majorities of Canadians who reside in Ontario (58, Alberta (also 56 and British Columbia (also 51%) hold favorable views on immigration,” he writes.

Andrew Griffith, a policy analyst and former director-general of IRCC’s Citizenship and Multiculturalism Branch, said the new levels are a continuation of the government’s strategy of growing the economy through increased immigration.

“I strongly believe a royal commission or equivalent is needed for a more independent look at immigration, one with a broader and more critical focus than the immigration industry perspective,” he says, reported in Check News.

Conclusion

Conclusion: Canada’s plan to welcome 1.3 million immigrants over the next three years is a direct response to an aging population, insufficient workforce, and declining birth rates. The new plan will help boost Canada’s economy by bringing in skilled workers through the Express Entry application process and international students who will spend their time studying abroad after graduation.
